Tried several times to use my Frost/Flame Shocks on the Molten Lock or Icy Lock, but it never worked... until the first Release Candidate 10.0.2.46479
So I guess you just need a spell/attack of the magic school mentioned in the Lock's buff now.
I wonder if weapons with a fireball proc, or frost damage (waves at Viscidus) will also work.

3 days after the launch it seems conventional methods such as Enchant Weapon - Elemental Force, Frost Oil, Enchant Weapon - Deathfrost, Phial of Glacial Fury, etc, etc aren't working on these kind of "chests". I tried them already.

You don't have to wait to reach Rudimentary Magical Lockpick / Crystal Magical Lockpick awarded from Dragonscale Expedition Renown level 16 however, since the spell Mechanism Bypass given by one of the earlier renown levels can be used to open these protected containers just target the floor instead of the chest itself in the air and that's it. The only downside is the 2 hours cooldown.

Problems opening these if you dont have any frost spells?

Use Phial of Glacial Fury and pull a mob next to the chest and dmg the mob so that the ice AOE's the chest.
This will remove the molten lock from it and you can open the chest.

If you dont have any mobs nearby, ask a friend or someone close to duel you and do the same thing.

You can also use Mechanism Bypass if you have Renown Level 16 with Dragonscale Expedition
Unstable Elemental Confluence Works but you still need an Target to get it to proc (AOE)

To remove the Molten Lock as a mage, I just cast a frost spell (Ice Lance) at the chest. The lock was removed and I could loot the chest.
For the Icy lock I cast Fire Blast to remove it.

If you're a priest you can cast Mind Spike from shadow spec (counts as frost) on the Molten Lock.

For the Icy Lock you can use Purge the Wicked from disc spec (radiant damage counts as fire damage).

Items like Everchill Anchor, Fusion Hacker, and Brunnhildar Harpoon do not work because the element is an additional effect on a melee swing, but the chest is immune to the initial melee swing, meaning the secondary effect from the proc can't happen. Whatever you hit it with needs to be primarily elemental damage.

For hunters like myself, frost trap doesn't work since it does no damage of course. However, the Exotic Ability for the Chimaera family is Froststorm Breath. Was able to pop molten locks with it, no other mobs required to bounce the AoE off of.

I was able to open this as a warlock with Chaos Bolt, since it counts as all types of damage simultaneously.

Can confirm that it also works with frozen devotion enchantment proc to open the chest which is nice cuz its a BIS weapon enchant.

Demon Hunters can just Fel Rush at the chest to unlock it, since the chaos damage counts as all classes of magic.

Frost Grenade are able to do damage to the chest but won't remove the shield.
Endothermic Blaster Didn't work either.

Couldn't open as Blood DK, so I switched to Frost and Howling Blasted it.

Any frost damage would do it.

edit: Conjured Chillglobe is usable on these if you're in a intellect spec. I tried this a dozen times in guardian druid spec and it just put it on cooldown without doing anything

If you are like me and think that 'Darkmoon Deck: Rime' - Darkmoon Deck: Rime should work with Molten lock from Magic chest, save your money. Tested it multiple times and all I get when using it on Molten lock is 'Immune'. I took one for the team.

I don't understand though why it would not work since it does frost damage, it is also use ability not equip. Really confused.

You can very easily open this if you don't have a frost damage class if you equip the heirloom trinket Unstable Elemental Confluence. Just keep damaging and it will eventually proc frost damage!. Works for Icy Lock as well.

I'm sure its a bug, but I came here dumbfounded when I found one and my Frost DK spec abilities didn't work, at all. Logged onto my frost mage and ice bolt DIDN'T work. So i'm assuming these can be bugged from time to time. Like how some Rock Walls can be "locked" until you log out and back in. When I logged back into my DK and tried it, it worked. Why it wouldn't on my frost mage you're gonna have to talk to Blizzard. These bugs make me angy.

Frozen Devotion (Enchant Weapon - Frozen Devotion) weapon enchant works on this. Was trying to get Unstable Elemental Confluence to proc but the weapon enchant procced instead!

Other people can remove the lock for you! I had been standing there spamming abilities like a dummy with the Unstable Elemental Confluence equipped, was about to give up when someone else turned up and removed the barrier to the chest. I wasn't grouped with them but was able to loot.

I used the (Iceblood Deathsnare) trinket and it worked on the Molten Lock. I have not found any Ice Locks to test it on yet.

As a BM hunter I attacked the chest. My trinket (Whispering Incarnate Icon) infuses me with frost. Chest opened easily.

Shaman can use Frost Shock on it and it will then be unlocked.

As BM Hunter I just used Mechanism Bypass and it instantly unlocked. It's on the first page of your general spellbook bottom of the left column.

You can use Mechanism Bypass if you have Renown Level 16 with Dragonscale Expedition. On a 2 hour cool down.

FYI, Frost Oil applied to a lower-level polearm did not work for my Guardian Druid. She is only level 65 and I wonder if the Molten Chest can only be opened by a max-level (70) character...

If you have Enchant Weapon - Frozen Devotion just take some NPC in front of Molten Lock and do some meele dmg. I open it by this :D

As a rogue, I had Phial of Glacial Fury on. Popped the turnip bag next to the chest, and only took 2 swings. This should work for every melee class without native frost damage, I think.

I wasted time buying those glacial potions, which then fail in combat.
I don't have the BoA item, so I bought a frost want, only a 170 iLevel, but it cut righty through it.
If you can use a wand, don't even bother with the other methods.
