He's a character from the Sunwell Trilogy, a comic published in 2005 that is also where Kalecgos first appeared. He was part of a team of bounty hunters who specialize in hunting dragons, and were hired to kill Kalec.

Showed up as a skull on the map, flew across the map to him. It was a crew of 4 or 5 rare mobs. Killed them easily, got two i369, one i372, and one i376 item from the group (as an i374 equipped player).

Waited at (42, 39) where he spawns for about 3-4 hours and no spawn. Either its a really long respawn timer or the spawn rate is bugged on some shards/servers.

Hopefully it gets addressed soon, so far its the only source for the Highland Drake: Hairy Cheek

Edit (12/14/22): Went to check on the rare today and his crewmates Groth, Snee, and Voll were dead, but Harkyn wasn't anywhere to be found. Likely despawns much faster.
Could be possible that certain rares, such as this one, cycle every other week

When on a level 60 alt I flew by his spawn and there was an object, I think it was called "Barrel of Rocks", or something like that, which requires level 64 to interact with.
I hopped on my main and flew over to it, only for it to not appear for my main. Swapping to the alt again, the barrel had vanished.
I don't know what the barrel does, but it was next to the dead dragon and the non-interactable barrels and boxes, so I assume it is part of how this guy is spawned.

Finally spawned today at 2 AM EST.
Did not get the drake glyph I wanted, but also got the following not listed on his drop table currently:
Protector's Molten Cudgel (Epic ilvl 372)
Protector's Molten Cudgel (Rare ilvl 369) (Yes, two of them!)
Qalashi War Helm (Rare ilvl 369)
Dragon Shard of Knowledge

Edit: On God, I have spent more time waiting for this guy to show up than it took me to get my Time-Lost Proto Drake, still only seen him once.

I can confirm he exists! Spawned 2:02pm EST on Stormrage-US server! I can also confirm he does indeed drop the Hairy Cheek customization for the Highland Drake (Highland Drake: Hairy Cheek)! Was my 2nd kill...been camping a full two weeks and only saw him one day before this about a week ago. He has got to be on a day-to-day rotation like Zereth Mortis rares, because there is no way he is a daily spawn. Good luck everyone! DO NOT GIVE UP!

I think this one is bugged, at least on some servers. With the amount of camping i've done since launch, i haven't seen him once on SIlvermoon-EU since launch. It's extremely frustrating!

Spawned today at 2:04 PM on Moon-Guard, still didn't get my Drake manu, but I'll be chilling on my Beach of Eternal Salt with my alts for the rest of the day. Pull up a chair and fish with me if ya want, hahaha!

Anyway, point is: Spawned on MG Dec 23rd so he is definitely on today's "Rare Rotation" as we've taken to calling it.

Edit: What's up fellow Harkyn Haters, it is now 8:04 PM and I've sat on this beach for 6 hours on my alt so you don't have to. Harkyn has not respawned in that time. What does this confirm? Nothing super specific, but this guy has an insane respawn timer. I've tested respawns on other daily rares such as Zerimek, who was 80 minutes by comparison. Skewersnout has spawned twice in this area while I have waited.

(Don't worry I have a second screen, been watching my partner play games on her Switch while I sit on the beach, I am ok!)

Nothing is more heartbreaking than seeing him just today, and not getting the hairy cheek manuscript. :( I have been on and off camping him for hours at a time since launch and he didn't drop it! It hurts! They need to do something about his spawn rate, or the rarity of his drake manuscript.

Edit: He spawned at 7:30 AM Moon Guard server time.

So I wanted to add an interesting observation I made as I farm this guy for the cheek drop (going on a couple weeks now). I have my two current mains on Wyrmrest Accord and Shadow Council. (Note: All times listed below are server time - Pacific for Wyrmrest and Mountain for Shadow Council).

A couple days ago I encountered him for the first time at 3am on Wyrmrest Accord, landing in time to see his corpse and a bunch of folks flying off. On a lark, about 10 minutes later I considered that there was a chance he spawned on Shadow Council too, so I swapped over just in time to find his corpse again (RIP, lol). I camped him from 3pm to 3am the next day in vain hope there was a 12hr spawn timer... and the rude dude never showed up, lol.

I figured it was an interesting coincidence, but it got me wondering if his spawn might actually be universal across all servers (or certain ones?).

Today I happened to be sitting at the beach right as he spawned at 5pm on Wyrmrest Accord, and finally got a kill (got the Cliffside horned-nose manuscript instead though, if I recall correctly). I tried swapping to Shadow Council again, and once again found his corpse, so he'd just been killed. That's a helluva coincidence. Notably, Wyrmrest Accord is on Pacific Time while Shadow Council is on Mountain Time.

This could still be a giant coincidence, but It looks like when he spawns on one server, there's a good chance that he spawns on all servers at the same time, regardless of timezone. Every time I've seen him it's been on the hour, though I see some reports of him spawning on the half-hour. Given that his spawn timer is so hard to peg down, my current theory is that every 30 minutes or so there's some sort of back-end RNG roll to determine which rares/super-rares spawn into the Dragon Isles (and there's a fair chance that there might also be daily exclusion lists at play, like in Zereth Mortis).

So if you're farming for this, it looks like you're safe to basically check in around every hour/30-min interval to see if he's spawned... and if you just miss him on one server and have an at-level alt on another server, you can try quickly swapping for another chance at him (which will depend on how quickly folks pounce on him on the other server, so more likely in the late hours on a low-pop server/cluster). It also means that if someone from another server gives you a data point of when he last spawned, there seems to be a decent chance that this may also be true of other servers as well.

I also think he has a hopium detector, because I've only encountered him or his corpse when I'm not explicitly camping out for him, lol.

As another side-musing, I do wonder if he's actually the only source of the cheek hair drop, since he's been dropping manuscripts that aren't listed in his loot table. Stands to reason this could be happening elsewhere as well with other manuscripts maybe?

Spawned today on Moon Guard 5PM EST. No Manuscripts.

Checked the group finder and he had indeed spawned on other servers at the exact same time as the previous comment suggested, I can confirm that you can only loot him once per day, as I did not get loot the second time despite tagging all of the rares present.

I`ve been camping him for a week and only saw him spawn once on EU 7:02 realm time, no manuscript.
The next day I saw him spawn on EU 5:02 realm time. No manuscript. I`ve read Turrin`s comment about how it can spawn on a different realms at once and decided to try it.I`ve switched on my Die Aldor lvl 64 alt and the gang were also up there. I`ve made a group in lfg. Again, no manuscript for me, but rogue in my group got it and said that he already has it, so he traded me the manuscript. I dont know if its possible to get a manuscript which you already learned. Maybe he was holding one in his bags. Either way, shout-out to Silencira-Magtheridon, ty again!

This spreadsheet (EU) has the times in Central European Time for when this rare will spawn.
This spreadsheet (NA) has the times in Eastern Time for when this rare will spawn.
This WeakAura (EU/NA) provides a countdown to the next rare that will spawn, by default it has the coordinates and zone in the text message but can be disabled in the Custom Options tab.

The rare is on a 14 hour rotation with one rare in the rotation spawning every 30 minutes. (Except for after Eldoren where there's a 1 hour gap because Phenran is no longer part of the rotation.)

Pretty sure he is bugged. The three adds that spawn with him also drop epic loot, making it a ridiculously good source for enchanting materials now that we know the exact time he will spawn. Just got 3 resonant crystals and 7 vibrant shards from disenchanting the 4 epics that dropped, all at the minimal effort of looking up the time he spawns and making sure to swoop by when he did to get a tag in on him and the mobs that spawn with him. Done this for the past 3 days now in my hunt for the titanic scholars finery transmog and they dropped 4 epics every single time, too.

Spawned today so I flew there and landed right on the pack of adds, pulling them. As I wanted to be nice and let other get there, I flew off. The adds all immediately despawned and no one got a tag.

I got the notification for Harkyn spawning while solo'ing the Forgotten Gryphon in bear spec. I shadowmelded, flew to Harkyn, stealthed into cat to take a screenshot (a habit I do for Wowhead, especially for rares). I saw him turn toward me, since he's rare-elite and has better stealth detection ... and then the &*!@#$% despawned right in front of me. My shard was DEAD, there was no one else around. That was the first time I'd seen him spawn. WTF.

As of the 4th week of february, 2023, since the last weekly reset this rare has not appeared in european realms* on the last 4 predicted spawns (couldn't check 5th).
Considering these 2 facts:

the rare himself and the adds were all dropping loot, making a total of 4 epic items per spawn
they were dying very quick, because the health pool (4 × ~1M at level 70) was not shared as I believe it was intended, instead each hit affected all 4 (AoEs and cleaves were doing 4× damage)

I'd consider that Blizzard might have disabled him.

* I have personally checked 2 realms on war mode on and off and talked to friends on other 2 realms with the same result.

Seems to no longer be spawning at the correct time on NA. Has not spawned the last 5 times I've been there and have seen multiple reports from other players saying the same.

Unsure if the timer for it changed or if it's just not spawning.

Did NOT spawn today for 11am eastern time on 4/27 on NA-Dalaran.

UPDATE: Spawned at 10:33am eastern time on 5/4, which is a few days after the 10.1 patch went live. Did drop four epics as some other commenters have posted. Had to leave the immediate area for him to spawn, and then fly back in. Was camping spawn waiting for timer but went out of sight and at which point he spawned on the map.

Just so you all know, he despawns after 4 minutes. We were waiting on someone to arrive, and the rare asked us what we were waiting for and despawned a minute later. :( Unfortunately Blizzard does not reward kindness.

I landed at this spawn point about a minute before his scheduled time, waited 5 minutes, left the area and came back, left the zone and came back. Could not get him to spawn.

As a warning, it seems like this rare (and presumably the other rares on the 14h cycle) can only be looted once a day. So if you have the opportunity to kill this early in the morning and late at night, use different characters.

It's basically impossible to loot this guy while dreamsurges are in the zone cause he dies before you can tag him, due to the 3 mobs he shares health with not being immune he can still die before becoming attackable, people just don't know how to wait

As of 10.1.7 and with Dream Surges occuring in the Waking Shores he not only is off his normal spawn-cycle but spawns about every two hours with varying respawn times.

As he himself is protected by the Dream Surge spawn protection for 60 seconds while his cronies aren't (I don't know how Blizzard could not see this) I'm not sure about his loot. He is easily killable (since he shares health with the other three) before being attackable. You can loot him after dying this way, but I don't know whether this affects his loot table.

I'm just hunting for the glyph (I want my dragon have this funny beard on his cheeks!) and I've already lost track how many times I have killed him the last days. I'm coming here with 10 alts and noone was lucky to loot the glyph so far.

And I just would wish, Blizzard would put a little thought into their mechanics before bringing them live. The spawn protection is very good. This way you have enough time to travel accross the zone. Being able to circumvent this spawn protection is a little strange, if not to say ridiculous.

For anyone interested in lore: this guy is from The Sunwell Trilogy manga. When he was a kid, his family got killed by dragons and he was obsessed with hunting them ever since (no matter their colour). He seemed to have mellowed out.

So it's weird having him here as an enemy, especially that it was Kalec, who convinced him not all dragons are like black dragons. In DF we find him just having killed a blue dragon. I guess the change of heart didn't take or it was just an enemy of my enemy situation.

If you're camping him, have a 2nd toon there in War Mode. A lot of the time he doesn't spawn on schedule normally, but I can usually catch him in War Mode.

What's the deal with it not spawning sometimes? Got to the spawn point 20 mins before scheduled spawn and waited for an hour longer with no show. 2nd time this has happened

I think the Dreamsurge event is affecting this guy's spawn time; tried waiting for him when he was 'scheduled' and he never showed up...then the next morning I logged in and like a minute later saw 'Harkyn Grymstone is being empowered by the Dreamsurge' message at a super random time. Flew over to his spawn point and sure enough there he was. Sheer speculation on my part but if the Dreamsurge event is active maybe it needs so many rares per hour and if one isn't up the game will force spawn one and thus throw off the schedule for that rare going forward.

After not having this guy spawn for what seems like the 12th time in a row, I went to his location on the map early.

Just had this guy spawn 45 minutes before he was suppose to (researcher sneakwing should be up next based on the rotation). WOWhead and the weakaura track when he is suppose to spawn in the rotation. Waking Shore is at the time of this posting has the Dreamsurge active, so you get chat notification when rares spawn because they are being empowered by the dreamsurge.

He spawned during the Dreamsurge with War Mode off! First time I've ever seen him outside of WM. During the Dreamsurge, he seems to spawn approximately every two hours, but that's just my experience with camping him so far.

Blizz seriously needs to look into why this guy refuses to spawn when he is supposed to.

He is part of the list that spawns every 14 hours in a set order, it's even on the front page of WOWhead as well as tracked via a weakaura, but this guy just wont spawn when he is supposed to. It's annoying as all hell when he is the only source of the drake manuscript for the Highland Drake: Hairy Cheek. Seriously blizz, fix the bug that stops him spawning or add the drake manuscript to something else, it's needed for the achievement highland drake head features.

Have to fight 20+ horde for a tag in wm on IF IT SPAWNS
Only get 1 maybe 2 chances at it per full 12 time slot rotatation.
For a 7% chance to get an achevement tied to something that I will never use.
This is literally terrorism by bliz.

I'm not 100% sure if the spawn is fixed or not, but Harkyn and crew spawned when they were supposed to with WM off today, 3/12 after server maintenance.

So, I dunno /shrugs.

I killed this guy at 2:00pm EST. My WA says he's supposed to spawn in 10.5 hours, which would 12:30AM est.

Spreadsheet shows next spawn time as 23:30, so the SS is an 1 hour earlier than est, which 1 hour earlier would be my server time.

He was supposed to spawn at 9:30am server, I killed him at 13:00 server..... so maybe he's 3.5 hours late or 10.5 hours early?

I know I've tried to kill him multiple times and he's never up, but I was in the area to popped over. I've heard his timer is bugged, maybe this will help someone? I'll be trying again with a 3.5 hour delay I guess LOL.

Killed him 20 times over 2 days during Dreamsurge and he has very odd behavior!

Sometimes he spawns with no empowerment, 20 seconds of empowerment, 60 seconds of empowerment, or no zone-wide emote.

I logged in one character, killed him, logged in the next, and he was already up. Most respawns, I had to wait 1 hour or more.

Whether I kill him after he becomes attackable or an oblivious player kills him before then, his corpse is always shiny and lootable. I haven't noticed a difference in loot, but I've yet to get the Hairy Cheek manuscript. I wonder if it even drops during the event. Sure he's up more during the event but I'm wasting a lot of time camping an unpredictable respawn. I can't do anything else either because when he does spawn, other players kill him in minutes.

EDIT: After the event, his loot table returned to normal and it dropped. Skip the Dreamsurge! Don't waste your time.

For the last couple of weeks, he has consistently spawned around 10 minutes late with WM off. I've been able to kill him with WM on, where he always spawns on time, and then WM off due to the delay. I finally got the manuscript today using this method.
